For Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 22

I used to sell old magazine covers from Norman Rockwell and other well-known artists during my junior and senior years in high school. I also sold old car, cigarette, gum, and Coca Cola ads. My father sold antiques at Burlwood in Meredith, New Hampshire with many other dealers. He specialized in what he called “primitives,” old tools and other things from everyday life. One day the owner of Burlwood offered me a couple rooms full of paper stuff for $50 if I took everything, including what I didn’t want. Suddenly I had so much stuff that I had to go into business. I rented my own booth at Burlwood.
It seemed a shame to break the magazines up, but that was the only way to sell them. I also sold some youth and women’s magazines whole, but for much less money. I spent a lot of time poring over their ads wondering about the times. Never thought I would major in history and become a historian though.
Anyway, here is a sentimental Thanksgiving cover from Rockwell. Happy Thanksgiving! May it be reasonably peaceful too.
I’d never seen that cover before; it’s a lovely one.
I used to sell vintage magazines and newspapers too, and found the same problem: folks would pay a pound or two for the whole thing, but were willing to part with a fortune for a specific ad or article or photo for their collection. I was a librarian at the time; it nearly killed me to tear apart magazines that way! LOL But I had children to feed, so what can you do?
Thanks for your visit to my blog earlier, I’m very glad to have found yours that way: I love history and am enjoying your posts! See you again soon–
