The latest issue of the OAH's Magazine of History is devoted to Human Rights. I don't know if you are familiar with it, but it includes readable and concise essays on various topics as well as lesson plans. Good luck.

An interesting approach. I wish I'd been exposed to that kind of thinking when I was in school.

The topic is huge, but it sounds to me like a required course - wouldn't it be grand to scale something like this down and require it nationally at the secondary level.

Great post, as was your other one on "Responsibility to protect - enjoyed reading them both.

@ Kevin, @ Nards: Thank you.

@ Steve: What matters from my point of view as a historian is less what was in the Bible and more how people's actions were informed by their faith. That's too big a topic for here, but natural law is relevant in this context. Seventeenth-century iterations of natural law were certainly a part of the Enlightenment's prehistory. So was the religious persecution of that time.

Interesting though, that if you go a long way further back than the Enlightenmernt, you can come across (in the Bible) "A righteous man knows the rights of the poor; a wicked man has no such knowledge".
