About

Clio is the muse of history and my name is Mark R. Stoneman. This blog contains occasional pieces about history in the academy, the classroom, current events, everyday life, popular culture, and my own research.

I specialize in modern Germany as well as war and society. My research interests include social and gender history, military culture, military thought, atrocities in war, and historiography. I am currently working on Wilhelm Groener, the Imperial German officer corps, and Imperial German war planning, including the Schlieffen Plan. I also continue to be continue to be interested in relations between German soldiers and French civilians in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. At the moment I am teaching survey courses as an adjunct professor at George Mason University and Georgetown University.
